Have you ever noticed how one little word can chain your dreams to the ground? It’s a word we’ve all used – perhaps too often. “Can’t.”
Such a tiny word. Just four letters and an apostrophe. But oh, how it echoes in the chambers of our hearts, drowning out the whispers of possibility that God plants there.
Let me tell you about a fisherman who dared to question “can’t.” His name was Peter, and on one stormy night, he gave us all a master class in possibility thinking.
Picture this: A storm-tossed boat on the Sea of Galilee. Waves dancing like mountains in the moonlight. And there, walking on the water as if it were marble, comes Jesus. The disciples see Him and react as any of us would – they’re terrified! But Peter… ah, Peter. He sees the same impossible sight and dreams up an impossible request.
“Lord, if it’s you,” Peter calls out, “tell me to come to you on the water.” (Matthew 14:28)
Now, let’s pause right there. Don’t miss this moment. While eleven other disciples were clutching the boat’s rails, one man was clutching a crazy possibility. That’s what faith does – it turns boat-clingers into water-walkers.
Want to know the secret recipe for possibility living? Peter left us a map with four divine directions. But before we unfold this map, I need you to make me a promise. Would you consider taking a fast? Not from food – from something far more toxic: negative thinking.
You see, possibility living requires possibility thinking. So let’s quiet those noisy negatives that keep shouting “can’t” in your ear. Are you ready? Really ready?
Step 1: The Prayerful Step Thirteen words. That’s all Peter needed. “Lord, if it’s you… tell me to come to you on the water.” No fancy theology. No lengthy petition. Just a heart reaching for heaven’s hand. Prayer isn’t about perfect words – it’s about persistent faith.
Think about it: Peter’s prayer wasn’t “Lord, calm the storm” or “Lord, save us.” It was “Lord, let me join you in the impossible.” When was the last time you prayed an impossible prayer?
Step 2: The Proactive Step “Then Peter got down out of the boat…”
Don’t speed-read past those words. They’re revolutionary. While others were saying “What if?”, Peter was saying “Why not?” Faith without feet is just wishful thinking. Peter had to “shake off” his fear and “put on” his faith – like changing clothes for a new season.
You know that thing God’s been nudging you about? That dream that seems too big, that step that seems too scary? Maybe today’s your boat-leaving day.
Step 3: The Productive Step “…and walked on water…”
Three words that changed everything. Physics said no. Logic said impossible. Experience said ridiculous. But Peter? Peter was too busy walking on water to hear them.
Here’s what fascinates me: Jesus didn’t suggest this water-walking adventure – Peter did! Sometimes our greatest miracles come from our boldest requests. The other eleven disciples? They had front-row seats to a miracle but settled for spectator status. Safe? Yes. Supernatural? No.
Step 4: The Positive Step “…and came toward Jesus.”
Notice the direction. Peter wasn’t walking on water to impress his friends or to make history. He was walking toward Jesus. Any step toward Jesus is a step in the right direction, even if it’s on water.
Friend, where are your steps taking you today? Toward the safety of the familiar, or toward the adventure of faith?
You might be in your boat right now, watching the waves of impossibility crash against your dreams. The wind of “can’t” might be howling in your ears. But remember: the same Jesus who called Peter out of his boat is calling you out of yours.
Your miracle might be just one crazy prayer away. Your impossible might be just one bold step from becoming possible. Because with God, there ain’t no “can’t.”
Ready to get your feet wet?
The water’s fine, and Jesus is waiting.
Keep walking, friend. Keep walking.
